The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced that Peter Seiffert will be awarded an honorary membership.
The company said, “Over 300 performances in 26 roles and almost four decades at and for the Deutsche Oper Berlin: Tonight, 22 May 2024, after the first act of Richard Wagner’s “Die Walküre”, we award Kammersänger Peter Seiffert an honorary membership of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Congratulations!”
In a statement, Seiffert said the most important moment of his singing life came on June 23, 1990 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin when he made his role debut as “Lohengrin.” He said it was a “drumbeat in his career.”
At the age of 28, Seiffert introduced himself to the audience at Bismarckstraße with Matteo in Strauss’ “Arabella” alongside Gundula Janowitz. He would go on to sing the German operas of Lortzing and Nicolai through Mozart, Smetana, and Janáček to Wagner. He left the ensemble in 1992 but remained a loyal member of the company and has performed such roles as Tannhäuser, Tristan, and Siegmund as well as Otello, Turridu, and Pedro in Eugen d’Albert’s “Tiefland.”
