Lisette Oropesa was awarded the high honour of Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. The order is awarded to “persons who have distinguished themselves for their creations in the artistic or literary field or for their contribution to the diffusion of the arts and letters in France and the world”.
The prestigious award was presented yesterday, March 8th, to the Cuban-born American soprano by Jean Philippe Thiellay, president of the Centre national de la musique, during a brief ceremony at the Opéra national de Paris that followed the under-28 premiere of Ambroise Thomas’ Hamlet, with Oropesa in the lead role.
An important moment, this for the American soprano, who was recently awarded Best Female Singer (Beste Sängerin) at the Oper! Awards 2023, Germany’s only international opera prize.
Lisette Oropesa has always had a special relationship with the Paris Opéra, where she made her debut in 2015 as Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail and has returned regularly to perform Gilda in Rigoletto, Marguerite de Valois in Les Huguenots, Adina in L’Elisir d’amore and Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
The Ordre ministériel des Arts et des Lettres was established in 1957 and is administered by the Minister of Culture, who decides on the nominations himself, considering the list of candidates proposed by the Council of the Order of Arts and Letters. Among the awardees are such personalities as Rudolf Nureyev, José Saramago, Cecilia Bartoli, Leonardo Di Caprio, Jim Jarmusch, Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman.
In the coming months, Oropesa will be engaged at the Teatro alla Scala as Lucia in a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor and as Fiorilla in Turco in Italia at the Teatro Real; in the summer, she will return to the Savonlinna Festival singing Juliette in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette for the first time and will make her debut at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence performing the entire role of Lucie de Lammermoor in the French version.
She has recently released several critically acclaimed albums with Pentatone: Ombra compagna, La Traviata and Rossini & Donizetti, French Bel Canto Arias.
