This staged production of Mozartian Requiem Mass comes to the Gran Teatre del Liceu on 18 February with the unmistakable stamp and debut of Romeo Castellucci. Giovanni Antonini will conduct this masterpiece in the history of music written for orchestra, choir and four soloists, the latter to be played by four international stars: soprano Anna Prohaska, making her debut at the Gran Teatre; mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti, recent winner of a Gammy Award; tenor Levy Sekgapane and bass Nicola Ulivieri.
The production, which opened the 2021-2022 season of the Palau de Les Arts in Valencia, is a staging devised by Castellucci for the 2019 Aix-en-Provence Festival, co-produced with Les Arts. His conception transforms the liturgical sense of the work into a reflection on human existence. To do so, the regisseur transfigures the Mozartian work together with other sacred works by Mozart, resulting in a show that stands out for its dynamism and innovation, already applauded in Aix, Valencia and Brussels.
