Rehearsals began yesterday at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo for Norma, the most famous of Vincenzo Bellini’s operas in a successful staging, already offered in 2017, directed by Ugo Giacomazzi and Luigi Di Gangi, produced by the Teatro Massimo with Arena Sferisterio of Macerata. The opera, which is already registering very high seat sales in all performances, will be staged on April 16th-22nd.
Performing Norma, one of the most impervious roles for soprano voices, is international opera star Marina Rebeka, and in replicas the darling of Palermo audiences Desirée Rancatore; Pollione is performed by tenor Dmitry Korchak returning to Palermo, and in replicas by Matteo Falcier; Oroveso, leader of the Druids and Norma’s father, is bass Riccardo Fassi; Adalgisa, Norma’s rival novice, is mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova and in replication Lilly Jørstad; Flavio is tenor Massimiliano Chiarolla and Clotilde Elisabetta Zizzo. Conducting Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Massimo is the young and already established conductor Lorenzo Passerini. Conductor of the Chorus, Salvatore Punturo. Assistant director is Alessia Donadio. The sets, inspired by the works of Sardinian artist Maria Laj are by Federica Parolini, costumes by Daniela Cernigliaro, costume assistant Pina Sorrentino, lighting design is by Luigi Biondi, lighting assistant Francesco Traverso. The premiere, Sunday, April 16th at 8 p.m., will be broadcast live on WebTv of the Teatro Massimo.
The debut of Norma is preceded by a number of introductory listening appointments:
Wednesday, April 12th, at 6 p.m., in the Sala ONU for Vi racconto l’opera, writer Beatrice Monroy will tell the story of Norma with actors Consuelo Lupo and Gigi Borruso. Admission: 3€.
Thursday, April 13th, 6 p.m. Also at Sala ONU, for the Introduction to Listening meetings organized by the Associazione Amici del Teatro Massimo, Graziella Seminara, professor of Musicology and History of Music at the University of Catania will talk about Norma. Admission is free.
Saturday, April 15th, at 6:30 p.m., the dress rehearsal will be open to benefit AIL, the association that promotes and supports scientific research for the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma; assists patients and families by accompanying them at all stages of the journey through the disease with services tailored to their needs; and aims to improve the quality of life of patients and raise public awareness of the fight against blood diseases.
