The enormous literary success that Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther encountered after its publication in 1774 immediately inspired numerous musicians who transposed the story of the love triangle.
But the most effective translation into music was that of Jules Massenet which, despite the initial difficulty in finding a stage for its debut – the premiere took place in Vienna due to the refusal of the main French theatres – quickly became the most performed opera of the composer.
Werther returns to La Scala from 10 June to 2 July in a new production conducted by Alain Altinoglu and staged by Christof Loy, both making their La Scala debuts. The cast is led by Benjamin Bernheim as Werther, with Victoria Karkacheva as Charlotte, Jean Sébastien Bou as Albert and Francesca Pia Vitale come Sophie.
The performance of 27 June will be live streamed on LaScalaTv. The shots may incidentally frame the audience (in whole or in part).
