INTERVIEW

English: The International Festival of Contemporary Music ENSEMS reaches its 48th edition in 2026, with a history spanning almost half a century, and continues to establish itself as one of the key spaces for contemporary sound creation. Founded in 1978, the festival has developed its own territory, where thought, experimentation and performance coexist, and where the music of our time finds a space in which to be heard, discussed and confronted with the present. This long trajectory has also helped position València as one of the centres of contemporary musical creation.

For more than a decade, ENSEMS has supported new operatic creation, particularly chamber opera formats, a field that, because of its relatively specialised nature and the complexity of its production processes, can hardly develop without institutional support. Rather than understanding opera as a genre closed within its own tradition, the festival has turned it into a space for experimentation, where music, dramaturgy, stage space and new technologies can establish new relationships.

This commitment has taken shape in works such as Zelle, wenn es dunkel wird, by Jamie Man, premiered as part of the 44th edition of ENSEMS in 2022; Woman at Point Zero, by Bushra El-Turk, which opened the 45th edition at Les Arts in 2023 as the result of a collaboration between ENSEMS, Les Arts and ENOA; and The Golden Stool, by Gorges Ocloo, presented as part of the 46th edition in 2024. The 48th edition features two operatic works: Estètica i massacre, by Carles Prat, and Einstein on the Beach, by Philip Glass.

This commitment takes on a particular dimension in the present edition under the direction of Beatriz Traver i Badenes, Deputy Director of Music and Traditional Culture at the Institut Valencià de Cultura. The discourse surrounding the festival begins with a question that is particularly pertinent to contemporary music: the criticism of music’s transformation into a fast-consumption product, subject to the logic of cultural “fast food”, raises an issue that directly affects contemporary opera.

INSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATION

The relationship between ENSEMS and Les Arts has now developed into an established partnership and has acquired increasing significance within Valencia’s musical landscape. The encounter between the festival and Valencia’s principal opera house allows works conceived through contemporary languages to find an appropriate production and performance structure, while bringing proposals into the operatic circuit that would otherwise struggle to find a place within a conventional programme. Les Arts therefore broadens the reach of ENSEMS’s commitment to new creation, while the festival offers the opera house an opportunity to explore less familiar territories.

What might initially have been understood as a collaboration between two institutions with different responsibilities and audiences has progressively become a space for dialogue around a shared question: how can the musical creation of our time find its own place before the public?

The Les Arts building itself, conceived as an architectural emblem of contemporary Valencia, provides a particularly suggestive setting for music that seeks to explore new forms of expression. Within this context, contemporary creation ceases to occupy a peripheral position and moves into the very heart of Valencia’s operatic institution.

The commitment of its artistic director, Jesús Iglesias Noriega, to incorporating contemporary creation into the artistic discourse of Les Arts acquires particular significance as the 2026–2027 opera season opens precisely with Estètica i massacre, within the framework of ENSEMS. These gestures towards contemporary creation are also worthy of recognition as part of Iglesias’s artistic direction and his commitment to new opera. An example came in the previous 2025–2026 season with Enemigo del pueblo, by Valencian composer Francisco Coll, a co-production and commission by Les Arts and the Teatro Real, which also received its world premiere at the Valencian opera house. The inclusion of Estètica i massacre now reinforces a conception of opera not as a museum genre, but as a living territory.

The gesture has an evident symbolic dimension: an opera house opens its season without looking exclusively towards established repertoire, thereby understanding the operatic institution as a living organism.

ESTÈTICA I MASSACRE

Estètica i massacre is a chamber opera with music by Carles Prat and a libretto by Carlota Gurt, born within the framework of the Òh!pera project at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. The work premiered at the Liceu on 25 July 2025 in an initial version lasting approximately thirty minutes. Prat and Gurt subsequently expanded the piece with a second act, transforming it into a chamber opera of approximately one hour. It is this new version that arrives at Les Arts and the ENSEMS festival in 2026, after also being presented at the Ópera a Quemarropa festival, at the Teatro de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, and at the Festival de Peralada.

Through a satirical and deliberately hyperbolic language, the piece explores a paradox that is both contemporary and uncomfortable: to what extent are we capable of violating our own identity in order to gain the acceptance of others? The “massacre” in the title is, above all, an intimate massacre: the destruction that takes place when the need to be seen, accepted and validated ultimately transforms who we are.

In Estètica i massacre, music and stage action establish a close dialogue from the outset. Carles Prat’s score reveals a deep understanding of the voice and its dramatic possibilities. His experience in the choral field can be perceived in a writing particularly attentive to vocal treatment, in which the music does not function as mere accompaniment but breathes together with the text and the stage action.

Prat thus constructs an essentially theatrical music, direct and immediate, capable of reinforcing different emotional states without ever losing its dramatic purpose. The chamber format proves particularly well suited to this approach, establishing a close relationship with the voices and allowing the different layers of the sound world to be heard with precision. Pablo Meléndez, on piano; Álvaro Rodríguez, on clarinet; Clàudia López, on violin; and Jorge Bosch, on percussion, form a solid ensemble, attentive to the demands of the stage and capable of maintaining an effective balance with the voices.

If the music provides the work’s inner pulse, Oriol Pla’s stage direction reinforces its theatrical dimension. His production is dynamic, physical and immediate, deliberately avoiding any operatic solemnity. Pla understands that this story requires direct communication with the audience and creates a staging that seeks to establish a connection with contemporary spectators. Movement, rhythm and the proximity of the performers help transform the stage into a recognisable territory.

Josep Iglesias’s set design reinforces this reading. Simple in its elements but rich in symbolic possibilities, it finds one of its most intelligent devices in the small red balls. Turned into a visual representation of social-media likes, they become a stage translation of the contemporary need for approval. Within the same visual universe, Alba Semper’s costumes are coherent with the scenographic proposal and naturally integrated into the whole. Mariona Ubia’s lighting, meanwhile, accompanies the space without overwhelming it and helps define the different atmospheres of the performance. Costume, lighting and set design thus share a common aesthetic conception without competing with either the music or the performers.

Vocally, soprano Maria Patak builds a markedly realistic interpretation. Her approach to the character avoids excess and opts for a direct expressiveness that fits particularly well with the work’s intention to present the audience with a situation that, beneath its hyperbolic appearance, is disturbingly recognisable. Patak succeeds in ensuring that the character’s inner conflict is never subordinated to the stage artifice.

Baritone Carlos Varela stands out particularly for the clarity and excellent articulation of the text. The spoken word acquires considerable dramatic weight in his interpretation and reaches the audience with precision without losing expressiveness. His stage presence likewise contributes to maintaining the balance between the theatrical and musical dimensions of the production.

One of the principal strengths of Estètica i massacre is, ultimately, its understanding that the contemporaneity of opera depends not only on the novelty of its musical language, but also on its ability to address the tensions of the present and to find an appropriate theatrical form through which to do so. Here, Prat’s music, Gurt’s libretto and Pla’s stage direction engage with a reality shaped by images, hyper-exposure and the constant need for validation.

The reduced means of chamber opera do not entail a reduction in quality. On the contrary, the proximity between musicians, singers and audience intensifies the experience, giving it a more immediate dimension. Estètica i massacre finds one of its principal virtues precisely in this proximity: transforming contemporary life into a mirror in which the spectator can recognise themselves.

ESTÈTICA I MASSACRE

Alice Lechner

Alice Lechner

Alice Lechner comes from a music-loving family. Her first encounter with the opera universe was at the tender age of six. The grandeur of the stage productions and costumes, the backstage chatter, and last, but definitely not least, the music left her in awe, beginning with Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The overall feeling that opera awakens in anyone who gets a glimpse into this part of artistic eternity, that each and every day passes the test of time, was what drew her to stay and be a part of this world. The Opera House of Brașov became her second home, and the people who worked there were her second family.

Since then, Alice has devoted her spare time to maximising her musical knowledge through instrumental studies, studying both piano and violin for a short time. In the following years, her number one passion stepped out of the limelight and graciously gave way to Law Studies.
Since 2018 she has been studying Law at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași.

Her passion for opera, even if it is no longer her top professional priority in terms of career, it has most definitely become her priority during her free time. Wanting to experience the best of both worlds and extend her musical horizons, she regularly attends opera performances throughout Romania and abroad.
With OPERA Charm Magazine, Alice aims to nurture her creative side to help it flourish and bloom and to discover, alongside the magazine’s readers, the fascinatingly complex world of opera.

Currently, she is an LL.M. in Business Law at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași.

Oana Zamfir

Oana Zamfir is a second year MA student at the “George Enescu” National University of Arts, at the Department of Musicology.

She studied violin for 12 years at the “Stefan Luchian” High School of Art in Botosani, later focusing on the theoretical aspects of music. In 2019 she completed her bachelor studies in Musicology as a student of the National Academy of Music “Gheorghe Dima” in Cluj-Napoca. Her research during 2018-2019 brought to the forefront elements of the archaic ritual within works of composers who activated during the communist period, giving her the opportunity to start a research internship at the “Carl von Ossietzky” University in Germany. In this context, she recorded conversations with members of the Sophie Drinker Institute in Bremen, and had access to documents directly from the Myriam Marbé archive.

Since 2019 she has been a teacher of Music Education and Theoretical Music Studies, making full use of interactive methods in the musical training of students and working, at the same time, with the children’s choir founded in the first year of her activity.

Her interests include pursuing a degree in interior design in 2020.

Alexandru Suciu

Alexandru Suciu inherited his passion for art growing up in a family of several generations of musicians. He began his musical studies at the “Augustin Bena” School of Music in Cluj, where he studied piano and guitar. Even though his main study direction was philological, his passion for music prevailed. He began his academical journey at the Faculty of Letters of the “Babeș-Bolyai” University, studying Comparative literature and English. He continued by studying Opera Singing at the “Gheorghe Dima” National Music Academy. He also graduated the Musical Education section, followed by Artistic Directing at the Musical Performing Arts department.

His multidisciplinary education opened the doors towards research, which is seen both through his participation in national and international conferences and symposia, such as the Salzburg Easter School PhD-forum, organized by the Salzburg Universität or the Silesian Meeting of Young Scholars, organized by the Institute of English at the University of Silesia, as well as the collaboration with Opera Charm Magazine.

During his student years, he won several prizes, including the Grand Prize at the “Paul Constantinescu” National Musical Interpretation Competition, the Romanian Composers and Musicologists’ Union Prize at the same competition, the First Prize and the Schubert Prize at the “Ada Ulubeanu” Competition.

He further developed his artistic skills by specializing in courses and masterclasses held by personalities such as Vittorio Terranova, Giuseppe Sabbatini, Marian Pop, Ines Salazar, Riccardo Zanellato, Paolo Bosisio, Valentina Farcaș and Manuel Lange in contexts such as the Internationale Sommerakademie für Operngesang Deutschlandsberg, Corso Internazionale di Canto Lirico I.M.C. Licata or the Europäische Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst Montepulciano. Besides his activity on-stage, he currently teaches Opera Singing Didactics, and Pedagogical Practice within the Department for Teacher Education and Training at the “Gheorghe Dima” National Music Academy.

Cristina Fieraru

Cristina is a 24 year-old Romanian soprano & a student at the National University of Music Bucharest, where she pursues the MA program in Vocal Performance.

She made her debut in Pamina from “Die Zauberflöte” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at only 19 years old at the Bucharest National Opera House, as a member of the Ludovic Spiess Experimental Opera Studio. Over the years she made her debut in roles such as Contessa d’Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Mimì & Musetta (La Bohème), Alice Ford (Falstaff), Erste Dame (Die Zauberflöte) in her university’s opera productions.
Her passion and experience extends in the field of choral music, too.

She has been part of our dream team since the fall of 2021. For a good period of time she took care of OPERA Charm’s social media and took you on the monthly journey through the history of opera through our Legends rubric – and a few times through the Theaters around the World rubric.

Her little soul rubric – from 2021 to present – is definitely the Conductors of the Future, where, every month, she gives you the chance to meet a young star of the world of conducting and, of course, to find out what’s the most charming feature of opera in these artists’ views.
