“American soprano Ilanah Lobel-Torres’ honey timbre would make even Cerberus bend” (ForumOpera). Originally from New York City, Ilanah is now based in Paris where she is in her last season as an ensemble member at Opéra national de Paris. In the 2025/2026 season, Ilanah makes her anticipated debut as Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro led by Maestro Antonello Manacorda in Netia Jones’ staging, as Waldvogel in Siegfried in a new production by Calixto Bieito under the baton of Pablo Herras-Cascado, as Mrs. Schlesen in a new production of Satyagraha by Bobbie Jene Smith, with conductor Ingo Metzmacher and as Clorinda in La Cenerentola under Maestro Enrique Mazzola. She also jumps in with minimal rehearsal for the role of Micaëla in Carmen under Keri-Lynn Wilson in Calixto Bieito’s staging.
In past seasons at Opéra national de Paris, she received unanimous praise from critics for her debut as Krista in Krzysztof Warlikowski’s production of Věc Makropulos under Susanna Mälkki (she slips into the skin of Krista with confidence and excellent resonance in the room which is based on a vibrant and slightly full-bodied amber tone. Her game is embellished with a subtle seductive touch) (Formal Haut) and sang Beatriz in Calixto Bieito’s new staging of The Exterminating Angel led by composer Thomas Adès, jumping into the role at less than 24 hours’ notice. (The singers' explosive vocals deliver a truly uninhibited performance…. These include Ilanah Lobel-Torres”) (Resonance Lyrique). She also debuted at Santa Fe Opera as the “impeccably sung” (The Classical Review) first wood sprite in Rusalka under Lidiya Yankovskaya where she was deemed an “utter delight” (Opera Today).
Ilanah has a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from New England Conservatory and a Master’s of Music degree in Opera from Mannes School of Music. Upon graduating from her Master’s, she was immediately invited to join the Young Artist Program known as L’Académie de l’Opéra National de Paris where she spent two seasons as a young artist.
