Huigang Liu, bass, was born in Inner Mongolia, China. He earned his Master’s degree in Opera Singing in 2022 at the C. Pollini Conservatory of Padua, studying under Cosetta Tosetti. In 2023, he attended the Rodolfo Celletti Bel Canto Academy (Paolo Grassi Foundation) in Martina Franca, and in 2024, he participated in the Advanced Professional Training Course for Opera Singers at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Later that year, he joined the Young Artists Program at the Accademia del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (2024–2026) and, in July 2025, attended the Alberto Zedda Rossini Academy in Pesaro. Huigang has won numerous awards in international competitions, including the role of Alidoro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Tullio Serafin Competition, First Prize at the Paride Venturi International Academy of Opera Competition, and Second Prize at both the Valerio Gentile and Maria Labia International Opera Singing Competitions. He also received a scholarship in honor of Italian tenor Maurizio Graziani. Over the years, he has refined his repertoire with guidance from renowned artists including Ernesto Palacio, Barbara Frittoli, and Roberto De Candia. In the 2024/25 season at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Huigang made his debut as Dr. Grenvil in Verdi’s La Traviata, Pinellino in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, the Count of Ceprano in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and the title role in Mendelssohn’s Die erste Walpurgisnacht. He also performed as Lord Sidney and Don Prudenzio in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims at the Rossini Opera Festival. His other notable roles include Pierotto in F. L. Gassmann’s Gli uccellatori, Death in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, the Chamberlain in Nino Rota’s Lo scoiattolo in gamba, and Benoit/Alcindoro in Puccini’s La Bohème. He has worked with distinguished conductors such as Renato Palumbo and Francesco Lanzillotta, and directors including Denis Krief and Roberto Scandiuzzi. In the upcoming 2025/26 season, Huigang will debut as the Doctor in Verdi’s Macbeth and as Astolfo in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, continuing to establish himself as one of the most promising young basses of his generation.
