Recent highlights include a series of debuts as Don Giovanni in Don Giovanni at Opera Carlo Felice Genova, Haly in L’italiana in Algeri at Rossini Opera Festival, Marcello in La Bohème at Armenian National Opera, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus at Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Opéra Nice Côte d'Azur, Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos at Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi, and Vicenza Opera Festival with Budapest Festival Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Iván Fischer.
Nominated as the ‘most sought after singer’ of the year by OpernWelt magazine in 2018, his wider engagements include the roles of Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Opéra National de Lorraine, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Teatro Verdi in Pisa, Teatro Verdi Trieste, Theater Basel, Gran Teatro Nacional of Lima, Staatstheater Hannover; Papageno in Magic Flute at Teatro Regio Torino; Poeta in Il Turco in Italia at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca; Schaunard in La Bohème at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, and Stadttheater Klagenfurt.

Gurgen was a member of the Accademia Rossiniana at ROF Pesaro. He studied voice at the Armenian State Conservatory and Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main under the tutelage of Hedwig Fassbender. In his early career, he was a member of the ensemble at the Armenian National Opera, a guest artist at the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and Yerevan Opera Studio, and later a guest artist at Oper Frankfurt, where he performed a variety of roles.
Awards include 2nd prize at the Pavel Lisitsian Competition in Russia (2013) and the Young Singer of the Year Award (2010) from the President of the Republic of Armenia.
